Colour Themes for Weddings

Most people are very excited and flattered to be asked to be a bridesmaid.   For little girls it is their dream come true and for older women of contemporary age as the bride, it is an affirmation of your friendship.

Whilst little girls will look lovely in most colours, you may not have to be quite so careful if your bridesmaids are under seven, but teenage and adult bridesmaids will need to wear colours that suit them, if they are to look their best.

There are some “universal” colours that suit anybody.  “Soft white”, “taupe”, “stone” and “pewter” suit all skin tones but these may not be a good choice if the bride is wearing a shade of white, cream or taupe herself unless you want the Bridesmaids in exactly the same colour as the Bride.

Other colours to choose from that flatter all skin tones and hair colours are “mint”, “turquoise”, “emerald” and  “teal” if you like blues and greens, or “periwinkle”, “purple”, “blush pink” or “true red” if you prefer pinks and purples.

If none of these colours appeal, the alternative is to choose the colour you like, for example “aqua”, and dress your bridesmaids in different shades of that colour to suit their own natural colouring.  All the dresses could be the same style but slightly different shades so they would tone with each other but flatter the individual and still co-ordinate with the theme colour.  This can be very effective and each bridesmaid will be delighted to wear a colour she knows really suits her.

The time of year for your wedding plays an important part in the choice of colour, for example pastel shades don’t seem quite right in the winter and equally dark burgundy or pine green is better suited to a winter wedding. You may also want to consider which flowers are in season, if you are having fresh flowers in your bouquet.  Flowers tend to be blues, pinks and purples in early summer and more vivid shades of orange, red and yellow by late summer.
